If it is Your fist time that You plan a trip with Your own vehicle - or
if You think
of buying and selling a car there's some general hints & tips concerning
registration of Your vehicle, Number Plates, Insurance, Shipping & Co.:
Car Registration:
Having Your car registered in Your home country while travelling is expensive
and there is possibilites to get around this. In our case (being from
Switzerland),
I produced more or less professional imitations of the original number plates
before we left Switzerland and we travelled for 18 months across Canada to
Alaska and all the way down through the USA, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El
Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica to South America without any problems.
Before we left Switzerland I posted the original plates and officially
unregistered
our car which saved us any further costs back home.
Important: You need the original car papers of Your registration! So
before You start travelling just post the number plates and keep the
original documents!
In Switzerland the car documents do not carry a "valid until" -
date which also
makes long term travelling very easy.
You need country specific insurances for most of the countries in
the world. So there is definitely no need to keep Your original expensive
registration and insurance of Your home country running unless there is no
other way to keep valid car documents.
Insurance:
In North America, Mexico and Guatemala and some other countries in Central
and Latin America You need a "third pary property insurance"
(German:
"Haftpflichtversicherung") by law and we definitely recommend to do so
as You
might end up in prison if You have an accident without an insurance coverage!
There is no problem to buy insurances in most of the countries - even without
a permanent adress. While You have to evaluate them Yourself in Australia,
North America, f.e. in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala You can just easily buy an
insurance at the border entry.
