Expeditions in Alaska:

Expedition Summary August 2002,
Hints&Tips for hikers...

The main reason  for our expedition to Katmai National Park was
the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes (VTTS), the site of the
Katmai eruption, famous since 1912 because of the great eruption
called "Novarupta" where Mount Katmai collapsed and thirty cubic
kilometers of stored magma was released within a little more
than two days.

Valley of The Ten Thousand Smokes, 3rd August 2002

No eruption since 1912 has - in terms of greatness - come close
to Novarupta. Novarupta was a few 1991 Pinatubos - or, as we
learned from local volcanologists, - about 100 Mount Saint Helen's
blasts!

The valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes is the largest feature
that was produced during this great "Novarupta" eruption
and
is surrounded by beautiful Volcanos like Mount Mageik , Mount
Trident , Mount Griggs which we hoped to be able to climb or at least
get to see from close during our 8 day expedition in the park.
